Named for the
Island’s three evaporation ponds, Salt Island was once
an important source of salt for the ships of Her Majesty,
the Queen. The island and its salt ponds, although still belonging
to the Crown, are operated by the local populace. Each year
at the start of the harvest, one bag of salt is accepted by
the Governor as annual rent, Local salt islanders conduct
tours and explain how the harvesting is done.
While there are many fantastic dive sights in the BVI’s,
the most celebrated is the wreck of the Rhone, a royal mail
steamer that went down off Salt Island during a freak hurricane
in 1867. The aft section of the wreck lies in about 30 feet
of water and the remains of the bow in about 70 feet. |
